What is a MORTON'S Neuroma ?
If you sometimes feel that you are "walking on a marble," and you have persistent pain in the ball of your foot, you may have a condition called Morton's neuroma. A neuroma is a benign thickening of the tissue that surrounds the digital nerve leading to the toes.
It is not a tumor.
Morton's Neuroma shown in circled area.
How is the diagnosis made ?
After the clinical suspicion of a neuroma, an MRI of the foot is the more specific and sensitive radiology exam in order to confirm the diagnosis and look for other forefoot conditions that may cause foot pain.
What is the treatment ?
A small incision (1cm) is all it takes to resect surgically the portion of the nerve that is thickened and provide you relief from the pain. The recovery period generally consists of only a few days.
