Bunion

What is a Bunion (Hallux valgus)

If the joint that connects your big toe to your foot has a swollen, sore bump, you have a bunion. A Bunion is a common hereditary deformity most frequently seen in women and is often blamed on wearing tight, narrow shoes and high heels.

What are the symptoms ?

• A bulging bump on the outside of the base of your big toe

• Swelling, redness or soreness around your big toe joint

• Thickening of the skin at the base of your big toe

• Corns or calluses — these often develop where the first and second toes overlap

• Persistent or intermittent pain

• Restricted movement of your big toe

What is the treatment of the bunion

If your bunion has progressed to the point where you have difficulty walking and experience frequent pain, surgery will provide you relief from the pain and give your foot and toes a normally aligned aesthetic aspect. Bunion surgery realigns bones, ligaments and tendons so that your big toe can be brought ack to its correct position.

An ankle-block anesthesia is used during the surgery in order to decrease the pain and allow walking with special shoes on the day after the surgery.

This operation only necessitates one day of hospital stay.
